What is a Project Controls Technician?
A project Controls Technician controls, monitors, and systematically analyses progress and performance data for engineering, manufacturing, construction and infrastructure projects. A successful Project Controls Technician has the experience to identify, as well as the technical discipline to implement effective and accurate estimating, scheduling and cost engineering.
The Project Controls Technician Apprenticeship lays the groundwork for moving forward into Project Controller, Estimator, Planner, Scheduler and Cost Engineer professional positions. More often than not these positions are invaluable members of large teams in complex projects. Given the nature of the project environments it is critical to ensure detailed progress and performance tracking, an understanding of on-site hazards, as well as guaranteeing health and safety requirements are understood and complied with.
A position in Project Controls is a hands-on one, and one that requires a high level of skill, affording trained professionals the opportunity to achieve a secure and fulfilling career.
Different employers have different standards and requirements from their apprentices. We work hard to ensure the best fit between the employer and the candidate, however typically a candidate will have achieved a minimum of a C grade in at least 5 GCSEs, including Maths, English and Science, and hold at least 120 UCAS points or equivalent qualifications.
The typical duration for this apprenticeship is 36-42 months.

Learning While you Work
Here at LMC we are specialists in Project Controls, and we’ve used that experience to devise an advanced training regime and delivery system designed to work around the employer’s requirements.
We set out to develop competency in our apprentices by giving them access to an online learning environment that enables them to build their skills, retain information and directly feed their experience back into the workplace.
This course, delivered in online virtual classrooms, includes Technical, Occupational and Software training. We work with employers to enable their apprentices to use concurrent, real-life projects as case studies for their coursework and supply examples to educate our students about the life-cycle of a project.

Where do you go from there?
Project Controls Technician Career progressionUpon completion of the Apprenticeship, our students are eligible to apply for membership to the Association of Cost Engineers (ACostE) as a Graduate Member. Given that the Project Controls Technician graduate has accrued suitable experience in Engineering, they may also apply to be reviewed for registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech).
With further training available following on from the completion of the Apprenticeship, individuals may choose to specialise in specific sectors or related roles, which each have the potential to lead to membership in other professional bodies. Specialised roles include areas such as Project Controls, Planning, Scheduling, Estimating, Cost Control, Risk and Quality Assessment, and ultimately a role as a Project Controls Manager or Director.
